Blind Flange (BL)
A blind flange (BL flange or flange cover) is simply a solid circular disc with bolt holes. It has no bore and no hub—just a forged plate that is bolted between two flanges to shut off fluid flow, isolate piping, or provide an access point for pressure testing. During forging, the grain structure extends through the entire thickness of the blind flange, ensuring that its pressure rating matches that of the corresponding weld-neck flange.

Typical Applications
Equipment Maintenance and Isolation: During pipeline maintenance, blind flanges can isolate the upstream and downstream media, thereby preventing leaks that could lead to safety incidents.
Pressure Testing and Purging: Temporary Plugging Used During Pipeline Strength or Tightness Tests
System Segmentation and Provisioning: In multi-series piping systems, blind flanges are installed at isolation valves to achieve system segmentation; alternatively, during expansion or modification projects, unused pipeline ends are temporarily sealed off to reserve space for future expansion.
Auxiliary pipeline isolation: For auxiliary pipelines that must be completely isolated during normal plant operation—such as nitrogen and compressed air lines—as well as equipment vent lines and drain lines, blind flanges shall be installed downstream of the valves to ensure tight shut-off.
